Eugenio ‘Eugene’ Torre

ASIA’S first Grandmaster Eugenio “Eugene” Torre is appearing in a documentary being filmed by the BBC-HBO on the life of late Robert “Bobby” Fischer, one of the greatest chess player that ever pushed a pawn.

Matthew Justus, co-producer of the project, invited Torre to be in New York on the last week of November for the live interview.

Fischer died of renal failure in Iceland on January 17, 2008 and left some P140 million and gold deposits in the Landsbanki, one of the biggest banks in Iceland.

The BBC-HBO documentary will focus on the chess exploits of Fischer when he single-handedly shamed the Soviet Union by wresting the world title from Boris Spassky during their 1972 epic match in Reykjavik.

It will also feature their return match in the former Yugoslavia which earned a US Federal charge for Fischer resulting in his incarceration in a Japanese airport cell in 2007.

Torre will provide the Philippine connection in Fischer’s life starting with his early visits to the country in the early 70s to his romantic liaisons.

Nanjing Pearl Spring Chess Tournament 2009

Nanjing Pearl Spring Chess Tournament, in this round match, Carlson defeated Topa, Wang Yue draw with Jakovenko
[2009-09-29 ] Hit Count :146

2009 Nanjing Pearl Spring Chess Tournament Prix started the second round of the contest in Nanjing Pukou Mingfa Pearl Spring Hotel at 3:00 p.m. on September 29 Beijing Time. In the just ended competition, Chinese famous player Wang Yue draw with Russian chess player Jakovenko. Yesterday, Norwegian player Carlson who played up the song of victory defeated the defend-champion Bulgaria famous player Topalov, and won two games in a row.

Today Wang Yue played Black in the usual Russian defense against her old rival Jakovenko. In the layout stage, the two sides exchanged out three light pieces. Afterwards, in order to get rid of the passive, Wang Yue discarded a pawn in the chariot wing to make counterattack. Jakovenko ate the pawn to bravely accept Wang Yue’s attack. To 20th round, Wang Yue ate back the pawn, and the two sides were off the empress, and entered chariot-elephant-five-pawn balance power situation. Since then both sides were off check-elephant, and eventually in the chariot-pawn endgame, battled to 35 rounds to form three repeated the situation, and afterwards, drew with each other.

In other two games of chess, the most interesting game was undoubtedly the two players with highest scores and defending champion, Topalov VS Norwegian prodigy Carlson. After 41-round contest, Yesterday, Norwegian player Carlson who played up the song of victory continued a strong upper hand, and in the ancient Indian defense, won over Topalov, and won the two games in a row. After the beginning of this game of chess, Topalov soon showed a surprising flaw in the back limb, and Carlson immediately gazed at the opponent's weaknesses and developed a smooth attack to smoothly get multi-pawn superiority. Under pressure, Topalov started stubborn fighting back, but Carlson calmly suppressed the opponent's counterattack, and finally forced Topalov to give up the battle to 41st round of stop clock. Following this summer's Sofia competition, this is another victory that Carlson defeated Topalov.

Hungary famous player Leko firstly battled 32 rounds against Azerbaijan chess player Radjabov in Sicilian Defense, and also created the unchanged repeated situation and drew with each other.

After tow battles, Carlson won two games after two competitions, and led alone; Wang Yue, Radjabov and Jakovenko have two draws in a row, and occasionally have 1 point respectively. Topalov and Leko have one draw and one loss, and have 0.5 points respectively.

At 15 o'clock on September 30 will start the third round competition. Wang Yue will firstly be against the bellwether Carlson; Topalov will be firstly against Leko; Radjabov will be firstly against Jakovenko.
